This weeks’ ‘Long and Short of It’

The latest Bullish Percent numbers:

BPNYSE          Xs @ 18%             OFFENSE

BPOTC            Xs @ 16%             OFFENSE

BPS&P 500     Xs @ 18%             OFFENSE

Offense

The Offense is on the field and that means we are once again in the capital appreciation mode. For most of you, this is going to be hard to swallow. I've been doing this a long time and when the signals say offense, we move to offense. Does it mean throwing everything that you own into the market right now? No.

That would be silly given all that has transpired over the past few weeks. What it suggests is that a great deal of the risk in the market has abated and that it is time to stick a toe into the water.

What we'll be doing this week is just that sticking in a toe. My gameplan is to add 4-5 names to the Long/Short portfolio.

What I don’t want to do is to get sloppy. Moving from defense to offense is not akin to a stop light changing from red to green. The move to offense is a process and we have to treat it that way.

The sectors that are the strongest right now are: precious metals, specialty pharma, biomedical, and railroads. I really like the natural resource sector but is has really been destroyed.

What to do now?

The other day I had the opportunity to reconnect with some folks that I went to high school with. It was nice to catch up with these people and to learn what’s been going on for the past 30 years. Even after all this time, it was nice to learn that they are basically the same people I remember them being.

A couple of things that I took away from the conversations got me to thinking about what’s really important. We all have our trials and tribulations and markets like the one we’ve been living with push them to unheard of limits.

This week, I am going to post a new blog each day (http://intelligent-trader.blogspot.com) with an assignment for everyone to at least think about.

Here’s the schedule:

Tuesday: Seven Questions – You owe it to your family to know the answer to these questions.

Wednesday: What’s your investment philosophy?

Thursday: It’s all about the process.

Friday: Are you a trader or an investor?

Saturday: Building your portfolio from scratch.

That’s about it for now. Let me here from you if you have any questions.
